This Ramadan feels different for many residents in Bahrain, as several traditional majlis gatherings and iftar buffets have been cancelled or postponed. Known for its lively evenings filled with visits, conversations and community gatherings, the holy month has taken on a quieter tone this year.

For generations, Ramadan nights have been marked by open majlis where families, friends and neighbours gather after iftar to socialise, exchange stories and strengthen social ties. The absence of many of these gatherings has left a noticeable gap in the usual rhythm of the month.

With exclusive interviews Abdullah Omran said to TDT the change has been felt by many who are used to the social nature of Ramadan nights. “We are used to visiting majlis almost every evening during Ramadan. It’s a tradition that brings people together, so this year feels a little sad without it,” he said.

However, Mohammed Abdullah reflected on the special role of Ramadan majlis. “The majlis are what allow us to see everyone, especially during busy times. Ramadan comes once a year, and it’s the chance to meet people we might only see once a year. Now, not being able to see them is very sad,” he said.

Although many majlis and iftar gatherings have been cancelled this year, Ramadan still brings people together in spirit. Families are finding new ways to connect, neighbours are checking on each other, and the sense of community remains strong.
