The UN’s top human rights official has called for a swift and transparent investigation into a deadly strike on a girls’ school in Iran that Tehran has blamed on the United States and Israel.
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged Washington to move “very quickly” with its probe into the incident, which Iranian officials say killed at least 165 students at the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab. The attack occurred on Saturday as the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran began.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Türk said the investigation must be prompt, transparent and impartial, stressing the importance of ensuring accountability and providing redress for the victims.
Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth denied American responsibility for the strike, stating that the incident is under investigation and that US forces “never target civilian sites.”
The call for an investigation comes amid growing international concern over civilian casualties as tensions between Iran, the US and Israel continue to escalate.
