Colombo: The president of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has called for peace after the country allowed an Iranian vessel to dock and provided refuge to more than 200 crew members.
Sri Lankan authorities said 208 people aboard the ship IRINS Bushehr were brought to the capital Colombo, while the vessel was placed under custody in Trincomalee on the island’s eastern coast.
The development comes as rescue operations continue following the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, which was reportedly torpedoed by a US submarine off the Sri Lankan coast on Wednesday.
Rescuers have recovered the bodies of 84 sailors from oil-covered waters, while 32 people were rescued. Authorities say several crew members remain missing.
The 180-member crew of IRIS Dena had been returning home after participating in naval exercises hosted by India in late February.
