Regional Developments amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate as missile strikes, drone interceptions and military operations unfold across several countries, drawing in regional and global powers.
In the United States, President Donald Trump backed a Kurdish offensive into Iran and claimed he played a role in choosing the country’s next supreme leader.
Meanwhile, Israel launched strikes on Tehran targeting what it described as “regime infrastructure”. Israeli military leaders later warned that “additional surprises” could follow as operations continue.
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched a coordinated missile and drone attack toward Tel Aviv, further intensifying the confrontation between the two sides.
Elsewhere in the Gulf, Qatar said its air defences intercepted a drone targeting Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military facility in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia also intercepted three ballistic missiles aimed at Prince Sultan Air Base, while some Western embassy staff were advised to shelter as a precaution.
Developments also extended beyond the immediate conflict zone. Three personnel from Australia were reportedly aboard a US submarine that sank an Iranian naval vessel near Sri Lanka during training conducted under the AUKUS security partnership. At the same time, NATO announced it was strengthening its ballistic missile defence systems following Iran’s regional attacks, including a missile reportedly targeting Turkey.
In Lebanon, the death toll from Israeli strikes has risen to 123, with 638 people wounded. The militant group Hezbollah responded with rocket and artillery fire toward Israeli positions.
Amid the broader instability, Egypt is facing economic pressures, with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi declaring a state of near-emergency over rising inflation and warning that traders could face military courts if price manipulation continues.
Further south, a Houthi leader in Yemen said the group’s forces are ready to strike “at any moment”. Meanwhile, authorities in Sri Lanka said they had taken control of an Iranian naval vessel following the submarine incident.
The developments highlight the widening scope of the crisis, with military confrontations, defensive measures and political tensions spreading across the region and beyond.
