Georgia: A 51-year-old Indian-origin man has been taken into custody in the United States after he allegedly shot dead his wife and three relatives in a violent domestic dispute, Gwinnett County police said. The tragic incident unfolded early Friday morning inside a home in the Atlanta suburb of Lawrenceville, leaving four adults dead and multiple children in shock.
According to investigators, the suspect, identified as Vijay Kumar, was involved in a heated argument with his wife, Meenu Dogra, 43, at their Atlanta residence before they travelled together with their 12-year-old child to a relative’s home on Brook Ivy Court. Once at the second residence, the dispute escalated and Kumar allegedly opened fire, killing Dogra and three of her relatives Gourav Kumar, 33; Nidhi Chander, 37; and Harish Chander, 38.
Three children present during the shooting including Kumar’s own son and two other minors aged 7 and 10 managed to escape serious injury by hiding in a closet. One of the children contacted emergency services by calling 911, which allowed police to arrive within minutes. Officers discovered the four adults with fatal gunshot wounds upon entering the home.
Police located the suspect nearby after tracking him on foot with the help of a K-9 unit; he was arrested without further violence. Kumar now faces multiple serious charges, including counts of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children.
The Consulate General of India in Atlanta expressed deep sorrow over the killings and confirmed it is coordinating with local authorities to offer support to the bereaved family. Three children who survived the shooting have been placed in the care of relatives.
Investigators have not yet publicly disclosed what triggered the initial dispute or whether there were any prior reports of domestic tensions. The community remains in shock as authorities continue their investigation.
