Romania Condemns Russian Drone Incursion, Citing Black Sea Security Risks
Romania strongly condemned the entry of a Russian drone into its airspace on Saturday, describing Moscow’s actions as a “new challenge” to security in the Black Sea region.
The incident follows similar concerns raised by Poland earlier this week, after Russian drones breached its airspace. In response, Polish fighter jets scrambled on Saturday to monitor new Russian drone strikes near the Ukrainian border, urging Moscow to avoid further “provocations.”
Romania, a NATO member, has seen multiple drone fragments land on its territory since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, particularly amid intensified attacks on Ukrainian ports.
In an official statement, Romania’s Defence Ministry said it “strongly condemns the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation and emphasizes that they represent a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea area.” The ministry added that such incidents highlight Russia’s “lack of respect for international law.”
The ministry reported that two Romanian F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the drone, which was identified as a Russian “Geran” drone. The drone reportedly entered Romanian airspace near Chilia Veche, flew southwest toward Izmail over a 50-minute period, and exited near Pardina, returning toward Ukraine.
Romanian jets were supported by two German Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, which helped monitor the situation. Authorities confirmed that the drone did not fly over populated areas and posed no immediate threat to public safety.
Romania’s Foreign Minister, Toiu Oana, stated on X that she plans to raise Russia’s actions at the UN General Assembly, calling for strict international compliance with sanctions.
In February, Romania passed a law allowing the country to shoot down drones that breach its airspace, reflecting growing concerns over regional security.
