UAE-Financed Solar Plants Inaugurated in Comoros to Boost Energy Security

Three solar plants with a combined capacity of nearly 20 MW are expected to generate 33.75 GWh of clean electricity annually, supporting around 17,500 households

President of the Union of the Comoros Azali Assoumani has inaugurated three UAE-financed solar power plants aimed at strengthening the country's energy security, expanding access to reliable electricity and supporting sustainable economic development.

The project was financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), implemented by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, and managed by Global South Utilities (GSU).

The inauguration was attended by UAE Ambassador to the Comoros Jumaa Rashid Alromaithi, ADFD Representative Ahmed Khamis Alkalbani, Masdar Head of Projects Dr. Mohamed Alzarooni, GSU Managing Director and CEO Ali Abdulla Alshimmari, along with senior officials from both countries.

Financed by ADFD at approximately AED 84.4 million, the project comprises three solar photovoltaic plants with a combined installed capacity of approximately 20 MW.

The largest facility, with a capacity of 12.86 MW, is located on Grande Comore, while Anjouan has a 4.05 MW plant and Mohéli has a 3.1 MW facility.

The project also includes battery energy storage systems with a combined capacity of 16 MWh and an output of 8 MW across Grande Comore and Anjouan. Around 30 kilometres of 20-kilovolt medium-voltage overhead transmission lines have also been included.

According to technical studies, the three plants are expected to generate approximately 33.75 GWh of clean electricity annually. This is equivalent to meeting the electricity needs of around 17,500 households while avoiding approximately 20,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Assoumani said the project reflects the strong partnership between the Comoros and the UAE and will contribute to strengthening the country's energy infrastructure.

He expressed appreciation to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his continued support for the Comoros' development priorities, saying the project would expand access to clean and reliable electricity while supporting economic resilience, sustainable growth and improved livelihoods.
