Iran has formally requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, urging the global body to condemn recent US military strikes on several of its nuclear facilities.
In a letter addressed to the Security Council on Sunday, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, described the strikes as a “grave threat against regional and international peace and security.” He confirmed that the attacks specifically targeted the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites in the early hours of the day.
Iran called the strikes a violation of the UN Charter and the international Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), warning of the potential for destabilization in an already tense Middle East. “These unlawful actions must not go unanswered,” Iravani wrote, urging the Council to take swift measures to condemn the strikes and ensure accountability for those responsible.
The letter also included a controversial claim that the attacks occurred “under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” although no supporting evidence was provided. Iran has increasingly voiced frustration with the IAEA amid growing tensions related to its nuclear program and the broader regional conflict involving Israel.
The request comes as diplomatic pressure mounts over the potential implications of strikes on nuclear sites, which international watchdogs have warned could pose significant risks to civilian safety and nuclear security.
The UN Security Council has not yet announced whether it will convene in response to the request.
