India is taking a significant step forward in artificial intelligence by developing its own large language model (LLM) through a public-private partnership (PPP), Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at the AI Action Summit in Paris.

Highlighting India’s commitment to leveraging AI for public good, PM Modi emphasized that the PPP model will pool key resources, including compute power, to make AI development more accessible for startups and researchers.

"India is building its own large language model, considering our diversity. Through a unique public-private partnership, we are ensuring that resources like compute power are available at an affordable cost. India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that the future of AI is for good and for all," he stated.

Co-chairing the summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi reassured global leaders that AI should remain a human-centric tool, asserting that no machine can replace human intelligence or decision-making.

India's robust digital public infrastructure, including the widely successful UPI network, has played a pivotal role in its AI advancements. The prime minister credited these initiatives as the foundation for India's National AI Mission, which aims to drive AI adoption while ensuring data privacy through techno-legal solutions.

"During our G20 presidency, we built a consensus on AI governance. Today, India is a leader in AI adoption, data privacy regulations, and developing AI applications for the public good," he said.

During his visit to France, PM Modi is also set to tour the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a key initiative in nuclear fusion research. In a gesture honoring historical ties, he will also visit Mazargues War Cemetery to pay tribute to Indian soldiers who fought in the World Wars.

Following his engagements in France, PM Modi will travel to the United States for a two-day visit at the invitation of US President Donald Trump.
