Electric car giant Tesla officially opened its first showroom in India on Tuesday, marking a significant step into the world’s most populous country. The launch comes as the company, led by Elon Musk, looks to grow in new markets while facing slower sales in the United States and Europe.

The sleek showroom, located in the heart of Mumbai—India’s financial capital—was inaugurated by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, in a private event. Starting Wednesday, it will be open to the public.

“This is the first launch of Tesla in India. It marks a huge milestone for Tesla globally,” said Isabel Fan, Tesla’s Senior Regional Director. She also announced that the company will begin installing charging stations in Mumbai and Delhi soon.

Tesla’s entry into India has been long-anticipated. For years, the company expressed interest in tapping into India’s growing electric vehicle (EV) market but had hesitated due to the country’s high import taxes. Elon Musk has previously called India’s tariffs “among the highest in the world.”

Currently, Tesla is offering its Model Y to Indian customers, with a more affordable version expected to be available later this quarter.

Despite heavy rain, Mumbai residents gathered outside the showroom, eager to get a first look at the famous EVs. Many see Tesla’s arrival as a boost for India’s clean mobility push and a sign that the country is becoming an attractive market for global tech and automotive brands.

Though the Indian government has offered to reduce import duties for EV makers that commit to local manufacturing, Tesla has not yet confirmed plans to build a plant in India. However, Tuesday’s launch could be the beginning of a deeper presence in the country.
