Bahrain’s 16-member Everest expedition team announced completing their COVID-19 tests yesterday in Nepal ahead of their trip to Lukla.

The team members are continuing in their isolation as part of the COVID-19 safety protocols.

Thaneshwar Guragain, the General Manager of the Seven Summits Trek, who is assisting the trek, told Himalayan Times, “The team will quarantine at the Marriot Hotel for a week following which they will carry out a PCR test of the team members.”

He also revealed that the team is all set to proceed to Lukla towards the end of this month and begin their final expedition by the second week of May.

Bahrain Everest team also intends to scale the Bahrain Royal peak before tackling the highest summit.

Last year, Nepal renamed Husurdanda in Samagaun as “Royal Bahrain Peak” in honour of Bahrain’s leaders.

In preparation, the team announced completing their first kit check and re-pack to identify and replace damaged equipment, if any.

“Each climber has a low camp and high camp bag, which will be carried by the Yaks to the base camp,” according to the team’s Instagram post.

The team consisting of 13 Bahrain Defence Force members and three British nationals arrived in Nepal on March 15.

Bahrain’s expedition team will stay in Nepal for 79 days, according to an Instagram post by His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

The team had also brought with them 2,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 jabs to inoculate the residents of Chumanubri Rural Municipality-1 in the Gorkha district.

“While they are climbing, they will pass by a village with 1,000 citizens living by the Bahrain Royal Peaks and get them all vaccinated,” Shaikh Nasser said.

The expedition team said they would deliver the vaccines under the guidance of the Nepal Minister of Health.

“Planning and administration will start early,” the team wrote.

Earlier, along with a picture of the team members with the box containing the jabs, Shaikh Nasser wrote, “The blue containers at the front contain 2,000 doses of vaccines that the Kingdom of Bahrain has donated to the village of Samagaun, Nepal on orders of HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.”

The Nepal Ambassador to Bahrain was present to wish the team good luck and thank them for the vaccine donation.

Last year, the team successfully scaled the Lobuche and the 8,163 meter-high Manaslu peaks in Nepal.
