Take action against illegal taxi operation in Bahrain : MP

ManamaThe government should take stringent action against illegal taxi drivers as they pose a serious risk to the security and regulations of the Kingdom, legislator Osama Al Khaja has said.

“If no official action is taken to tackle the illegal taxi phenomenon more black markets illegally offering these services will appear,” MP Osama Al Khaja warned.

Al Khaja also pointed out that illegal taxi drivers are harming legal cabbies, who “solely depend on their jobs to provide a living for themselves”.

“Legitimate taxi drivers are suffering from the lack of customers and the illegal drivers, mostly of Asian nationalities, are manipulating with the prices, transporting customers for fewer charges and monopolising the market,” Al Khaja said while calling upon the competent authorities to protect the legal Bahraini taxi drivers.

He commented, “The lack of official supervision has resulted in the emergence of a black market of illegal transportation services and this is harming the economy, tourism and image of the country.”

Al Khaja also underlined that “legal and illegal residents have easy access to obtaining driving licenses and more supervision should be applied”.

“The concerned bodies in the government should implement the laws and regulations on the violators as a necessity to ensure deterrence of those practising this profession illegally,” He added.

The MP’s statement comes while authorities such as Interior Ministry, Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry, the Public Prosecution and the Labour Market Regulatory Authority periodically announce the detection, arrest, trial or deportation of irregular residents, especially those offering taxi services in the Kingdom.
