Earlier escape busted, now appeal rejected

Manama

A 24-year-old prisoner, who reportedly attempted to flee while he was admitted in Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) had his appeal rejected.

The accused was earlier handed down one-year behind bars for his crime. He was reportedly taken to SMC to undergo a hemorrhoids surgery, according to court files.

But he maliciously deceived a police officer by convincing him to remove his handcuffs to go to toilet and apply hemorrhoids cream, ahead of the surgery. After a few minutes, however, he lunged out the toilet and headed to the first floor after knocking down the security officer.

"He told me he had to apply the cream before the surgery. And in good-faith, without consulting with doctors, I removed his handcuffs," the officer who was assigned to guard the accused said in his statement.

"I was shocked to see him rushed out the toilet, and before I could react, he pushed me down and went to the first floor," he added.

However, the accused was later arrested and during questioning, he told prosecutors the escape idea flashed into his mind when he was brought to the hospital. He was in police custody for his suspected involvement with a terrorist cell.

"I was in police remand for nine months, and I was admitted to SMC for eleven days for a hemorrhoids surgery, " the accused said in his statement.

"On the day of the surgery, I decided to escape. I convinced a police officer to remove the handcuffs," he added.A medical report was attached with the case, which showed the officer suffered mild injuries after being pushed down. The defendant was accused of attempted escape and causing injuries to an on-duty officer.
