Ladies Open Golf: Fiona Elsdon leads

Manama : Fiona Elsdon from Brisbane, Australia (gross 82) leads the two-day 29th Bahrain Ladies Open Golf Championship which teed-off yesterday at Awali Golf Club with 28 ladies in the fray from both the hosts and Royal Golf Club members, with second day action today teeing off at 10am.

Second place is Nicola Park (88), with Dena Wales (90) in third, while Ariette Paul, Susan Scott and Lynn St Lawrence (92) are fourth to sixth places respectively.

Rounding out the top ten are Kerry Diaper and Tracy Samson (93), Stacey Thomas (94) and the defending champion Sarah Hobday (94).

The leading six golfers with nett scores (based on handicap) are Nicola Park, Dena Wales and Tracy Samson (70), followed by Fiona Elsdon and Diane Loney (72) and Yvonne Addison (73).

Conditions were perfect and not so hot which made for perfect competition.

Highlights yesterday included Elsdon with birdies on the 13th and 17th holes, Paul managed a birdie on the ninth, Thomas on the 7th and 18th, St Lawrence on the 15th and Jan Watson (104) with a birdie two on the fourth hole.

The two-round contest over 36 holes concludes with a prize presentation at 5.30pm.

In charge of publicity at Awali Golf Club, Liz Kaila said, “Peter Rogers and his team did a great job of maintenance on the course after the downpour on Thursday which ensured play on the opening day

yesterday and we just hope that today’s play is not affected by more possible rain as forecast overnight and possibly in the morning.”

The Ladies Open sees cash prizes up for grabs for the winners and trophies for best gross and nett scores in the top three and outside the leading positions on the first and second days.

Event sponsors are Bapco, Banz, Airmech, Al Haddad, Coca Cola and African and Eastern, with a Hole-in-one prize of a Mercedes car on Hole 8.
