Traditional cannon had been fired after the Maghreb prayers
Manama
The time has come for prayers, fasting and sacrifice as Muslims all over the world will start observing the Holy Month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month in which Quran had been revealed, from today.
In the Kingdom of Bahrain, the citizens as well as residents have already entered into a pensive world, the world of prayers.
Heralding the arrival of the Holy Month, the traditional cannon had been fired after the Maghreb prayers in three different places in Bahrain – Manama, Riffa and Arad - by the Interior Ministry officials.
The cannon is a traditional way of letting the people know about the time of Iftar (the meal taken by Muslims after sunset during Ramadan).
Cairo, the capital of Egypt, was the first city to use the cannon as a form of notifying people about the Maghrib (evening prayer) all around the world.
A large a number of people had gathered in Manama, Riffa and Arad to witness the cannon fire. They consider it very special to attend the ceremony.
“There is not even a single instance when I missed the cannon-firing ceremony. It’s very special to me and watching this gives me a sense of elation,” said a Mohammed Siddiq, a Ghanain residing in Bahrain.
On the other hand, the mosques in the Kingdom are all set to receive worshippers and some have already set up Ramadan tents aimed at distributing food to those who flock to the place to pray and break the day-long fast.
A Ramadan tent has been erected at the Al Fateh Grand Mosque in Juffair, one of the largest mosques in the world, encompassing 6,500 square metres and having a capacity to accommodate over 7,000 worshippers at a time.
