Indian UN Peacekeeper Major Abhilasha Barak Named Military Gender Advocate of the Year

Major Abhilasha Barak, an Indian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), has been named the United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year for her exceptional contribution to gender-responsive peacekeeping and community engagement.

Major Barak has been serving with the frontline UN mission in Lebanon since June 2025. She was recognized for her leadership in advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda and for integrating gender perspectives into peacekeeping operations in a region facing heightened tensions and security challenges.

The award highlights her efforts to strengthen communication with local communities, support women's participation in peacebuilding initiatives, and ensure that peacekeeping activities address the needs of all members of society.

Speaking to UN News, Major Barak emphasized the importance of including gender perspectives in peacekeeping missions and building trust with local populations to create lasting peace. She noted that meaningful engagement with communities is essential for understanding their concerns and delivering effective support.

Her recognition comes as UNIFIL continues its operations in southern Lebanon amid ongoing hostilities and security risks. The award reflects the growing role of women in international peacekeeping efforts and the United Nations' commitment to promoting gender equality in conflict and post-conflict environments.

Major Barak's achievement has been widely welcomed as a significant milestone for India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions and for the advancement of women’s leadership in global security and peacebuilding efforts.
