Bahrain and Al Azhar Discuss Expanding Global Efforts for Coexistence
Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the King Hamad Global Center for Coexistence and Tolerance (KHGC), held discussions with His Eminence the Grand Imam Professor Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb, Sheikh of Al Azhar, during his official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The meeting was attended by Salah Yusuf Aljowder, Member of the Center’s Board of Trustees.
Talks focused on strengthening cooperation in support of coexistence, tolerance and dialogue between different faiths and cultures, while promoting principles of moderation and balance.
Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed highlighted the international academic and intellectual standing of Al Azhar Al Sharif and its longstanding role in encouraging moderation, dialogue and mutual understanding.
He also outlined a number of initiatives launched by the Kingdom of Bahrain to promote peaceful coexistence at regional and international levels. Among them is the HM King Hamad Award for Coexistence and Tolerance, which honours influential efforts and initiatives that help advance tolerance, coexistence and greater understanding between peoples and cultures.
The discussions also covered the need for stronger collective action to address hate speech and extremism. Both sides stressed the role that religious and intellectual institutions can play in building a culture based on peace, understanding and mutual respect.
The meeting further explored areas of mutual interest and the importance of expanding interfaith and intercultural dialogue. Cooperation between institutions was highlighted as an important means of exchanging expertise and supporting shared objectives in promoting peaceful relations among communities.
His Eminence Dr. Al Tayeb praised the Kingdom of Bahrain’s initiatives and efforts to strengthen coexistence, tolerance and dialogue among different religions and cultures.
He also underscored the value of continued cooperation and knowledge-sharing between the two sides in advancing common principles and objectives.
The meeting reflects the shared emphasis placed by Bahrain and Al Azhar on dialogue, moderation and mutual respect as important foundations for fostering greater understanding between communities and cultures.
