Lab Tests Sought After Petrol Mileage Complaints

Calls are being made for petrol sold in Bahrain to be tested after drivers said the same journeys now drain their tanks faster than before.

MP Jalal Kadhem said motorists deserve an answer on why they appear to be getting fewer kilometres from a tank at a time when higher petrol prices are already adding to family fuel bills.

‘People are paying higher petrol prices, so they have the right to know why their fuel seems to be running out faster,’ he said.

Kadhem called for fuel samples to be checked and present consumption rates compared with earlier figures.

He said the tests should examine the petrol's quality, its specifications and how far cars are travelling on it compared with before.

Any changes to the fuel that could affect mileage should also be explained, he said, and the results published.

Kadhem said he had received complaints from citizens who found themselves filling up sooner even though their routes, driving habits and distances had not changed.

‘There needs to be a clear comparison between petrol use now and before, so people get answers based on proper test results,’ he said.

The MP said motorists’ claims still needed to be proved through testing, but argued that the complaints were enough to justify checks.

Families should not be left paying extra at the pump without knowing why their petrol no longer appears to last as long, he added.

Kadhem also called for an examination of the effect of higher petrol prices on Bahraini households as families pay more for everyday needs.

He said complaints that directly affect household spending needed a clear answer from the government.
