New Oral Drug Offers Fresh Obesity Treatment Option

Bahrain has licensed Foundayo (orforglipron), a new once-daily oral medicine for obesity belonging to the GLP-1 class. The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) has approved the drug for use in Bahrain, with availability through pharmacies in line with medical guidelines.

Dr Hassan Abduljabbar said the medicine offers an alternative to injectable weight-loss treatments, particularly for patients who are uncomfortable with needles. Foundayo is taken daily, while medicines such as Mounjaro and Wegovy are generally administered weekly.

He said injectable treatments generally result in greater weight loss, although results vary, while the tablet can also provide significant weight loss.

Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, bloating and heartburn, particularly when treatment begins or the dose is increased. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or dehydration require medical attention.

Dr Abduljabbar stressed that Foundayo is not a “magic pill” and should form part of a long-term obesity treatment plan. He said patients should combine medication with a healthy diet, adequate protein and resistance exercise.

He also warned against starting, stopping or changing doses without medical advice, stressing that treatment should be based on individual assessment and regular medical follow-up.
