Gulf Health Systems Brace for New Challenges

Strengthening Gulf health systems and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of medicines and essential medical supplies took centre stage as GCC health ministers met in Bahrain amid heightened regional security and supply chain concerns.

Dr. Jaleela bint Al Sayed Jawad Hassan, Minister of Health, stressed the need for closer health cooperation and integration among GCC countries, alongside stronger mechanisms for coordination and the exchange of expertise and information.

She said enhanced cooperation would strengthen health system readiness, support sustainable health services and protect vital supply chains, while improving the GCC’s ability to respond to rapidly evolving health challenges.

The minister also addressed current security and regional developments and their repercussions for the countries of the region.

Dr. Jaleela condemned the Iranian attacks on Bahrain, GCC countries and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, describing them as violations of international law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.

She highlighted the impact of the attacks on lives and infrastructure, as well as transportation and supply chains, including the movement of essential and medical supplies.

The minister further highlighted concerns over threats to the security and safety of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, warning of potential repercussions for energy security, international trade and the availability of food, medicines and humanitarian aid.

She stressed the importance of strengthening joint Gulf preparedness and coordination to ensure resilient supply chains and the continuity of health services during regional disruptions.

Dr. Jaleela also called for sustained joint Gulf efforts and greater integration across health sectors in line with regional and international developments.

She said coordinated action would enhance the efficiency and preparedness of health systems across GCC countries and strengthen their ability to maintain uninterrupted services for the health and safety of citizens and residents.

The meeting reviewed the implementation of GCC Supreme Council decisions related to the health sector, strategic stocks of food, medicines and medical supplies, the GCC Strategy to Combat Drugs for 2025-2028, expatriate worker screening and other priority issues related to joint Gulf health cooperation.
