US Supreme Court Lifts Limits On Third-Country Deportations

Washington: The US Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Trump administration to start deporting migrants to countries other than their home countries, temporarily overturning a lower-court order that had limited the policy. The judgment allows deportations to go place without providing migrants with advance warning or the opportunity to express concerns about potential persecution or torture in the destination country.

The 6-3 decision came after a federal court declared the administration's third-country deportation strategy illegal. The Supreme Court has agreed to consider the broader legal case in December, so Tuesday's order does not constitute a definitive ruling on the policy's legality.

According to court documents, the strategy, which began in 2025, has led in the deportation of over 25,000 migrants to at least 28 third nations. Mexico, South Sudan, and Uganda have all served as destinations.

The administration contends that third-country removals are a vital immigration enforcement tool, but opponents argue that migrants should be given a real opportunity to make protection claims before being deported to countries where they may fear persecution or torture.
