An Asian man caught trying to smuggle 6.5 kilograms of synthetic cannabis hidden inside hair dye containers has lost his appeal against a 15-year prison sentence and a BD10,000 fine.

The High Criminal Court of Appeal also upheld his deportation after he completes his sentence and ordered the confiscation of the seized drugs.

A second defendant, who did not appeal, had previously been sentenced to six months in prison, fined BD1,000 and ordered to be deported after serving his sentence.

Customs officers intercepted the shipment after becoming suspicious of a parcel arriving from a European country and addressed to the first defendant. A search uncovered 12 hair dye containers concealing the synthetic cannabis.

The first defendant was later arrested, and a search of his residence led to the seizure of additional quantities of synthetic cannabis, crystal methamphetamine and marijuana, along with drug-packaging materials and precision weighing scales.

Investigators concluded that the drugs had been imported for trafficking as well as personal use. During the search, the second defendant arrived at the residence and was found to be under the influence of narcotic substances.
