Wall-climbing arsonist loses appeal

A man who scaled a wall, doused a parked car with kerosene and set it ablaze over a personal dispute has lost his appeal against a five-year prison sentence.
The First High Criminal Court of Appeal upheld the conviction and ordered the defendant, in his forties, to pay BD2,500 in compensation for the damage caused. The related civil claim was referred to the competent court.
The fire broke out in the victim's garage, where the victim and his son managed to extinguish the flames before they spread further.
Security camera footage showed the defendant climbing over the property's outer wall before pouring kerosene over the vehicle, setting it on fire and fleeing the scene. Investigators said he left behind the bottle used to carry the fuel. The incident stemmed from an earlier dispute after the defendant delayed returning a car he had borrowed from the victim's family. During the disagreement, he was alleged to have threatened to burn the vehicle. Forensic investigators confirmed that the fire had been deliberately started using an accelerant. The damage to the vehicle was estimated at BD2,500.
