BACA pushes ahead with Historic Muharraq project

Restoration and streetscape upgrades aim to preserve heritage and enhance visitor experience

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) is continuing work on the Historic Muharraq City development project as part of its vision to preserve the city's rich heritage while integrating historic sites into the modern urban landscape.

The project highlights the unique architectural character of Muharraq's heritage buildings, combining careful restoration with creative and innovative urban development.

BACA is directly overseeing the restoration of historic buildings across the city in coordination with relevant government authorities. Restoration works are being carried out in line with internationally recognised conservation standards, using authentic materials to protect the buildings' historical significance.

The authority is also advancing studies under the Muharraq Vital Streets Development Project, which focuses on upgrading the façades of buildings along Shaikh Hamad Avenue, the extension of Al Tujjar Avenue, and Bu Maher Street.

The initiative aims to improve the area's urban landscape, create architectural harmony that reflects Muharraq's cultural identity, and enhance the experience for pedestrians and visitors. The project is expected to further strengthen Muharraq's status as one of Bahrain's leading heritage and tourism destinations.
