Bahrain will ban the manufacture, import, and sale of single-use plastic bags with a thickness of less than 57 microns from August 20, as part of the Kingdom's efforts to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has urged manufacturers, importers, and traders to comply with Resolution (7) of 2026 and complete all necessary preparations before the regulation comes into force. Businesses have been advised to clear existing stocks of non-compliant plastic bags, halt their production or import, and ensure approved alternatives are available to avoid administrative penalties.
Shaikh Hamad bin Salman Al Khalifa, Assistant Undersecretary for Domestic and Foreign Trade at the Ministry, said the regulation is being implemented in coordination with the Supreme Council for Environment under Bahrain's legal and regulatory framework. He noted that the initiative supports the Kingdom's environmental protection goals, advances sustainable development, and aligns with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 by reducing pollution and encouraging recycling.
The regulation exempts household waste bags, hazardous healthcare waste bags, pre-packaged food packaging bags, and plastic bags manufactured for export. Plastic shopping bags with a thickness of 57 microns or more will continue to be permitted, as they are more durable and can be reused.
The Ministry is also encouraging consumers and businesses to adopt environmentally friendly alternatives, including cloth bags, paper bags, and fully biodegradable bags.
Shaikh Hamad said the Ministry has completed the first phase of its awareness campaign targeting the commercial sector and has now launched a second phase focused on manufacturers, importers, traders, and consumers. The campaign aims to increase awareness of the new requirements and ensure all stakeholders are prepared before the regulation takes effect.
He praised the commercial sector for its cooperation in implementing the Ministry's regulatory measures, expressing confidence that continued collaboration will strengthen environmental protection, improve waste management, and support the sustainable use of Bahrain's natural resources.
