Bahrain's Public Prosecution has ordered the pre-trial detention of a defendant accused of posting sectarian remarks on social media that authorities said were capable of inciting discord within society.
According to the Deputy Chief of the Cyber Crime Prosecution, the case began after the Cyber Crime Directorate, through its ongoing monitoring of social media platforms, identified a comment containing sectarian content. Investigations led authorities to identify the owner of the account from which the comment had been published.
The Public Prosecution immediately launched an investigation, reviewed the content of the post, and questioned the defendant. During questioning, the defendant acknowledged ownership of the social media account and admitted to publishing the comment.
Following the investigation, the Public Prosecution ordered the defendant's remand in custody pending further proceedings and referred the case to the Criminal Court.
