Arab League ministers meet in Amman
Ministers call for enhanced Arab coordination to address regional challenges
Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, chaired the 165th Ordinary Session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level in Amman, Jordan. Arab foreign ministers and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, participated.
Opening the session, Dr. Al Zayani expressed gratitude to Jordan for hosting the meeting and welcomed the participation of Arab foreign ministers. He stressed that the current regional situation requires intensified consultation and coordination to strengthen Arab solidarity and support regional security, stability, and development.
The Minister highlighted recent regional developments, referring to attacks attributed to Iran against several Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan involving missiles and drones targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas. He described these incidents as violations of international law and the United Nations Charter.
He also pointed to disruptions in maritime navigation caused by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, noting their impact on global trade and the stranding of thousands of seafarers away from their families.
Dr. Al Zayani welcomed the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at ending hostilities, describing it as a positive step toward de-escalation and a broader comprehensive agreement. He emphasised the importance of respecting the sovereignty of regional states and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
He further underscored the need to address threats to Arab security collectively, praising international diplomatic efforts, including mediation initiatives by Pakistan and Qatar, aimed at promoting dialogue and peaceful solutions. He also commended efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump in coordination with regional partners to support stability in the region.
Following the meeting, Dr. Al Zayani, Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit held a joint press conference outlining the key outcomes of the session.
Minister Safadi said discussions reflected a shared Arab understanding of the serious challenges facing the region and the need to strengthen collective action. He welcomed the US–Iran understanding and expressed support for continued negotiations toward a comprehensive settlement addressing the root causes of regional tensions.
