Food truck operators across Bahrain have been given a six-month grace period to regularise their operations and comply with licensing and regulatory requirements under a nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing urban standards, public safety and sector governance.
Mohammed Saad Al Sahli, Director General of the Northern Municipality and Coordinator of the Food Truck Regulation Project, said the grace period will run from June 21 to December 21, 2026. The measure will allow existing licence holders sufficient time to complete required procedures and obtain any outstanding approvals under current regulations.
Al Sahli said the campaign forms part of a coordinated effort by government authorities to strengthen oversight of the food truck sector, address planning and municipal violations, and ensure compliance with health, safety and municipal standards.
He noted that the initiative follows reports and observations regarding unauthorised structures and practices at some food truck sites that have negatively affected the appearance and organisation of public spaces.
The grace period applies exclusively to existing operators, while new applicants will be required to secure all necessary approvals and fulfil regulatory requirements before licences are issued.
Al Sahli stressed that the campaign is designed to support the sustainable growth of the food truck industry by ensuring businesses operate within a clear legal framework, benefit from approved locations and maintain consumer confidence through full compliance.
He also confirmed that no new fees will be introduced, with operators only required to complete the licensing and approval procedures already stipulated under existing regulations.
Authorities have identified several unauthorised permanent structures associated with food truck operations, including fences, seating areas and other additions erected without approval. Operators will be given the opportunity to rectify such violations during the grace period.
Government agencies involved in the campaign will provide guidance and awareness support to assist operators in meeting regulatory standards and completing the regularisation process.
Al Sahli said legal action will be taken against non-compliant structures once the grace period ends, including the removal of unauthorised installations. Licensed food trucks that meet all requirements, however, will be permitted to continue operating in accordance with approved regulations.
He encouraged food truck operators to take advantage of the grace period to complete the necessary procedures, contributing to a safer, more sustainable sector and an improved urban environment across the Kingdom.
