Berlin: German police initiated a terrorist investigation following an attack on a power substation in Brandenburg that damaged high-voltage cables and caused short circuits, authorities announced Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, near the Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant. Investigators discovered many probable incendiary devices, some of which detonated and damaged the power grid. A broad blackout was avoided, while one power plant unit was temporarily turned off.

Police said they are examining, among other things, the potential establishment of a terrorist organization, which resulted in an explosion and interruption of public services. The assailants' identities and motives remain unclear.

Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann said foreign participation could not be ruled out, adding that the event was part of a larger danger to Germany's key infrastructure. Authorities have not publicly identified any group as responsible for the incident.
