Venezuela’s Election Timeline Unclear as Trump Says Country Isn’t Ready

Caracas: Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has stated that Venezuela will hold elections when they are ready, despite ongoing ambiguity regarding the date for returning to the ballot box. Rodríguez has not set a date, citing her government's focus on establishing the necessary conditions for an election.

According to Rodríguez, Venezuela is now in talks with the US to ease or lift sanctions. She stated that these measures are part of setting circumstances for an election process, but did not provide a particular date for the vote.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that Venezuela is not ready yet for elections. During a press conference, Trump stated that the country requires more time, praised Rodríguez, and expressed support for elections.

Trump stated that he hopes elections may be conducted soon, but provided no exact date or parameters that Venezuela must achieve before polling can take place. His remarks highlight Washington's continuing influence over the country's political transition.

The uncertainty comes months after US soldiers removed and captured former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Rodríguez, Maduro's former vise president, now leads the interim government as Washington advocates for a political transition and elections.

For the time being, both Caracas and Washington claim elections are still on the agenda, but neither has set a specific date, leaving Venezuela's path back to elected government unclear.
