New York City Public Schools Ban AI Through Eighth Grade

New York City:  New York City public schools will ban artificial intelligence for students through eighth grade, responding to mounting warnings from parents and educators. The broad restriction impacts middle and elementary school classrooms across the district.

Under the upcoming policy, student access will be permitted only in high school starting in ninth grade, limited strictly to technical education about the technology itself.

AI companion chatbots designed for psychological support are completely prohibited, while teachers retain permission to use AI for lesson preparation.

The stricter rules follow pushback against an earlier March framework that allowed AI for research and creative projects, which parents criticized as too lenient.

Official concerns centered on potential risks to children's mental health, cognitive development, and environmental sustainability.

To establish permanent guidelines, the city is forming a dedicated task force including teachers, experts, union representatives, and elected officials. 

The advisory panel will publish a comprehensive report in April to shape future public school technology policy.

As the largest school district in the United States, New York City's technology policies are closely watched by education leaders nationwide.
