Renowned Bahraini artist Rashid Al Khalifa is showcasing Bahrain’s rich trading heritage on the global stage through his monumental installation, The Crate Maze, at Art Basel in Switzerland, one of the world’s premier contemporary art fairs.

Presented in the fair’s Unlimited sector, the large-scale artwork reimagines Bahrain’s historical role in regional and international trade through a contemporary artistic perspective.

The Crate Maze is a geometric installation made up of interconnected grid-like structures inspired by cargo containers and shipping crates that facilitate the movement of goods across global trade routes. Through the dynamic interaction of light, shadow and perspective, the installation changes as visitors move through and around it, creating an immersive and evolving visual experience.

The artwork explores themes of movement, exchange and connectivity, reflecting on trade as a force that has long linked cultures, economies and communities. It presents commerce not only as an economic activity but also as a driver of cultural dialogue, knowledge sharing and human interaction.

The installation pays tribute to Bahrain’s longstanding status as a trading hub, drawing inspiration from the Kingdom’s historic maritime links dating back to the ancient Dilmun civilisation, which connected trade routes between Mesopotamia, the Arabian Gulf and the Indian subcontinent.

Through a contemporary artistic language, the work offers a reflection on Bahrain’s enduring identity as a crossroads of commerce and culture.

Al Khalifa’s participation in Art Basel, which runs until June 21, underscores Bahrain’s ability to preserve and celebrate its cultural heritage while engaging with the global contemporary art scene. Presented in collaboration with Sapar Contemporary, a New York-based gallery representing the artist, The Crate Maze forms part of Art Basel Unlimited, the fair’s platform dedicated to ambitious large-scale artistic projects.
