The parliament approved a proposal to include sports facilities operated by clubs under the government’s electricity subsidy scheme, a move aimed at easing financial pressure on community and village-based sports organisations.

MPs said many clubs with limited income are currently being charged utility rates similar to commercial entities, leaving them struggling with high electricity and water bills.

The proposal, submitted by MP Mohsen Al Asboul alongside several lawmakers, urges a review of tariff classifications for national, village, and low-income sports clubs.

It calls for reclassifying these facilities under subsidised categories.

Al Asboul said many clubs operate purely as community and youth service hubs rather than profit-making ventures, yet face heavy utility costs that strain their budgets.

He added that sports facilities are widely used for training and youth activities, making them essential social spaces.
