Bahrain Proposes Amendments to Draft Resolution at IPU Assembly
The Bahrain parliamentary delegation submitted a comprehensive set of amendments to a draft resolution under discussion at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, during the 152nd General Assembly held in Istanbul.
The proposal was presented to the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security and focused on the role of parliaments in managing post-conflict phases and supporting the restoration of lasting peace.
The delegation included Abdulnabi Salman, First Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives, and Dr. Bassam Ismail Al Bannai.
Members of the delegation noted that their review of the draft resolution was aligned with the IPU’s mandate, highlighting concerns that certain provisions could be interpreted as assigning executive responsibilities to parliaments, particularly in areas such as security guarantees, peacekeeping, and management of funds or frozen assets.
They stressed the importance of maintaining the parliamentary nature of the resolution by limiting the role of legislative bodies to core functions, including lawmaking, oversight, accountability, and budget approval, within constitutional frameworks.
The proposed amendments aim to strengthen parliamentary roles in areas such as transitional justice, reconstruction, and the implementation of peace agreements, while also supporting national reconciliation and addressing the social and psychological impacts of conflicts.
The delegation affirmed that the amendments are intended to ensure alignment with the IPU’s parliamentary role, uphold national sovereignty, and contribute to achieving sustainable peace in post-conflict settings.
