A rise in mosquito activity following recent rainfall has triggered growing public concern across several areas of Bahrain. Residents report worsening conditions in the evenings and an increasing presence of insects inside homes.

Stagnant rainwater left in open spaces after the downpours has been identified as a key factor behind the outbreak, particularly in low-lying neighbourhoods and coastal areas where water tends to accumulate. Residents say the issue recurs annually, with similar conditions leading to repeated infestations

. Municipal member Abdulla Ashoor said the post-rainwater accumulation has created ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, warning that untreated stagnant pools can quickly turn into persistent sources of infestation. He also pointed to added strain on drainage and sewage systems, which slows water removal in some locations.

Ashoor called for urgent and expanded action from the Public Health Directorate, including wider spraying operations and increased field teams to cover affected areas more quickly. He also proposed upgrading the reporting system to a 24-hour hotline to allow residents to report issues at any time.

The situation has highlighted the need for stronger coordination between municipal bodies and public health teams. Officials noted that while priority is often given to reopening roads after rainfall, follow-up measures such as treating stagnant water must not be delayed.

Concerns were also raised about contributing factors within private properties, including improper water storage and drainage issues, calling for greater public awareness alongside official response efforts.

A formal letter has been submitted to the minister seeking urgent intervention and a comprehensive plan to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
