The Kingdom of Bahrain is moving forward with plans to strengthen its position as a regional and international hub for higher education, according to the Ministry of Education and the Higher Education Council.

The update was provided in response to a parliamentary question submitted by Nancy Dina Eily Khaduri regarding national initiatives aimed at improving the quality, competitiveness, and global reach of the Kingdom’s higher education sector.

National strategy

Officials highlighted the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research (2026–2036) as the key framework guiding development in the sector. The strategy focuses on building a globally competitive academic system, expanding international partnerships, and strengthening Bahrain’s academic reputation abroad.

Among the major initiatives is the Global Standards Index, which encourages Bahraini universities to improve their standing in international rankings such as QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education (THE).

The “Study in Bahrain” campaign was also highlighted as a key effort to position the Kingdom as a safe and high-quality education destination, aimed at attracting outstanding international students.

Academic Cooperation

The authorities noted ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with leading global institutions, expand joint degree programs, and support the establishment of international university branches in Bahrain.

The introduction of student visa facilities has further supported the growth of international enrolment and helped create a more diverse academic environment.

Bahraini higher education institutions are increasingly participating in international education exhibitions, conferences, and research forums, enhancing the Kingdom’s visibility in the global academic community.

Universities are also being encouraged to host international conferences and engage more actively in global research collaboration platforms.
