Foreign guards ‘cash in’ on disabled parking
Expatriate security guards are making money off parking bays reserved for people with disabilities, MP Hisham Al Awadhi has warned, saying some are letting other drivers take the spaces in return for payment.
He called for tougher checks at hospitals, shopping centres and public places, saying anyone found taking money or using their position for personal gain should face legal action.
Mr Al Awadhi said the bays were reserved by law for people with disabilities and should not be treated as a source of income.
‘People with disabilities have a right to these parking spaces. They are not there to be exploited or used to make money,’ he said.
He urged those responsible for the sites to keep a closer watch on the bays and act against anyone found letting unauthorised motorists use them for payment or other benefit.
The MP said people entitled to the spaces should find them free when they need them, rather than occupied by drivers with no right to park there.
‘The rights of people with disabilities are not for anyone to profit from,’ Mr Al Awadhi said. ‘Their parking spaces are protected by law, and no one is above the law.’
