Bahrain Eyes Temporary Ban on Filipino Domestic Workers Over Health Concerns

MP Mohammed Al-Ahmad has announced plans to submit an urgent proposal calling on the government to temporarily suspend the recruitment of Filipino domestic workers to Bahrain. The move comes as authorities monitor the epidemiological situation and the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines.

Al-Ahmad emphasized that the measure aims to protect the health and safety of both Bahraini citizens and residents, particularly in light of regional and international health reports highlighting a concerning rise in HIV cases in the Philippines. He stressed that Bahrain is committed to proactive preventive policies to shield the community from potential health risks associated with foreign labor.

The MP clarified that the suspension would be temporary and precautionary, not targeting the Philippines permanently. It would remain in place until the health situation stabilizes and reassuring reports are issued by international health organizations.

He also noted the need to explore hiring domestic workers from other countries to ensure that the needs of Bahraini households continue to be met without disruption.

According to a recent World Health Organization report, the Philippines is experiencing the fastest growth of HIV cases in Asia, with 57 new infections reported daily in 2025. Last year, 2024, around 29,600 new cases were recorded.
