California Utility Giant Blamed for Devastating Los Angeles Wildfire

California: An 18-month investigation by the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed that utility giant Southern California Edison caused the devastating January 2025 Eaton Fire. The blaze killed 19 people and damaged thousands of homes across Los Angeles.
Fire officials concluded the disaster was triggered by an electrical incident on a decommissioned transmission tower. Although inactive for decades, the line still received power from nearby high-voltage lines, ejecting hot metal sparks onto surrounding dry vegetation.
Southern California Edison accepted responsibility and established a recovery fund to support victims and avoid lengthy litigation. To date, the utility company has paid out more than $375 million to affected community members.
The findings add to a history of power-line blazes in California, as SCE equipment was previously implicated in the deadly 2018 Woolsey Fire and the 2020 Bobcat Fire.
