Brazil Asks Argentina to Recall Ambassador Amid Diplomatic Rift

Buenos Aires: Brazil has requested that Argentina return its ambassador from Brasília and downgrade diplomatic relations to the chargé d'affaires level, according to Argentina's Foreign Ministry. The decision comes after Argentine President Javier Milei repeatedly insulted Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Brazil's ruling came after Milei described Lula as a ‘thief,’ ‘corrupt,’ and ‘ex-convict’ in a televised appearance. In reaction, Brazil declared that its ambassador, Julio Bitelli, will not return to Buenos Aires, indicating a severe deterioration in relations between South America's two largest economies.

Since Milei took office, the two presidents have not held an official bilateral encounter, and diplomatic tensions have grown as a result of ideological differences and public debates. Argentina has yet to declare any disciplinary measures.
