New York: The United Nations has named Rabab Fatima, a senior Bangladeshi diplomat, as its next Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment on Wednesday, tasked Fatima with managing the UN's political and humanitarian engagement in Afghanistan during a period of severe financial strain and ongoing international concern about the Taliban's restrictions on women and children.

Fatima offers almost 30 years of diplomatic experience to the job. She was most recently Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and has previously held senior positions in the UN system, including Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States.

She replaces the departing UNAMA leadership and will manage the mission's operations to provide humanitarian aid, human rights monitoring, and communication with Afghan authorities, as well as coordinate international efforts to solve the country's ongoing issues.

UNAMA maintains a vital international presence in Afghanistan, striving to provide assistance and defend for all Afghans' rights amidst ongoing political and humanitarian concerns.
