Amsterdam: The Netherlands recorded 911 more deaths than usual during a two-week period as an intense heatwave swept across western Europe, with older people and residents in the hottest regions particularly affected.
The deaths were reported between June 22 and July 5, when temperatures in parts of the south and east of the country approached 40°C. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment said the exact cause of death was not known, but the heat was highly likely to have contributed.
The Netherlands is the latest European country to report a rise in deaths during a series of extreme heatwaves. Belgium, Britain, France and Spain have also recorded thousands of suspected heat-related excess deaths.
Scientists have said the June heatwaves would have been virtually impossible without human-caused climate change.
