'Goon' violence feared as Kenya marks protest anniversary

Nairobi: Nairobi is bracing for potential unrest as police enforce strict lockdowns to prevent demonstrations commemorating the second anniversary of the ‘Gen Z’ uprising. Security forces have established roadblocks across the capital, leading to the closure of schools and businesses in anticipation of possible clashes.
This annual day of protest traces back to June 2024, when thousands of Kenyans took to the streets to challenge corruption and economic hardship, ultimately storming parliament to force the cancellation of new taxes.
The movement, which bypassed traditional ethnic divisions, has come at a high cost, with a police watchdog reporting at least 127 deaths over the past two years.
While President William Ruto has acknowledged the right to demonstrate, he has issued stern warnings against property destruction. Tensions remain high due to the reported use of hired ‘goons’ to disrupt gatherings, fueling widespread fears that political mobilization could incite further instability.
