LONDON: World Wide Web pioneer Tim Berners-Lee has stated that artificial intelligence must preserve the ‘original values’ of his invention while ensuring individuals maintain control over their data.

Speaking at the SXSW tech festival in London, the British computer scientist emphasised that the internet's core focus has always been the primacy of the person, a principle that should now extend directly to AI development.

Berners-Lee called for tighter regulations on how AI systems are trained, noting that these models extensively use data harvested from across the web. He noted that while AI is an exciting development, it currently lacks a collaborative framework similar to the World Wide Web Consortium, hindering joint efforts toward standardization.

To mitigate the risk of tech giants exploiting personal data, Berners-Lee advocated for secure data technologies that filter user requests, shielding personal identities while allowing AI tools to operate safely.
