Beirut: Israel has increased its military operation in Lebanon by carrying out significant bombings, which Lebanese authorities claim have killed dozens of people and escalated cross-border fighting with Hezbollah.
Lebanon's health ministry stated that at least 31 people were killed and others were injured in the latest wave of Israeli attacks, which targeted the country's south and east. Several towns and rural areas were targeted, resulting in destruction of houses, roads, and other civilian infrastructure.
According to Israeli sources, the operation featured more than 100 airstrikes, which targeted Hezbollah command centres, weapons depots, and rocket-launch locations as part of a larger military effort aimed at reducing the group's operations in southern Lebanon.
The escalation comes amid Hezbollah launched rockets and drones into northern Israel in the past few days, sparking renewed gunfire along the border. In response, Israel has launched increasingly deeper strikes within Lebanese territory, claiming it does so to stop more attacks on Israeli residents in the north.
The latest instance of violence occurs in the midst of a fragile ceasefire framework that has often broken since previous rounds of negotiations, with both sides carrying out attacks almost every day in spite of diplomatic attempts to keep the war under control. According to Lebanese authorities, as the conflict extends beyond borders, the overall death toll has increased significantly in recent weeks.
