Measles Outbreak Kills Hundreds of Children in Bangladesh

Dhaka: Over 500 children have died in Bangladesh due to a rapidly spreading measles outbreak, according to health officials and international organisations.

Since March, the outbreak has infected thousands of children, and hospitals are struggling to keep up with the growing number of patients suffering from severe complications caused by the highly contagious disease. Authorities confirmed at least 512 deaths among children, making it one of the country's deadliest measles outbreaks in recent years.

According to health experts, the spike is mostly due to gaps in routine vaccination coverage, which leave many children exposed to infection. The World Health Organization and UNICEF have cautioned that falling vaccination rates have raised the likelihood of large-scale outbreaks, particularly among children under the age of five.

In response, Bangladesh started emergency immunisation campaigns and increased disease surveillance in areas of risk. Officials have asked parents to ensure their children receive the necessary two doses of the measles vaccination, warning that the death toll might continue to increase until the outbreak is controlled.
