Tasmanian government apologises over stolen body parts scandal

Hobart: The Tasmanian Parliament has delivered a formal apology to the families of over 100 people whose remains were secretly kept and displayed in a museum. The apology follows a harrowing 2025 coronial report into the RA Rodda Museum of Pathology at the University of Tasmania.

Between 1966 and 1991, 177 human specimens were taken during post-mortem examinations without family knowledge or consent. Health Minister Bridget Archer moved the motion, admitting the practice was a ‘profound breach of trust’ and a total failure of medical ethics.

Investigations have identified five individuals responsible for the illegal collection. Many families learned of the theft decades later, causing fresh shock and immeasurable grief.

While the apology is a vital step toward accountability, many are still calling for further redress. Premier Jeremy Rockliff acknowledged the ongoing pain, promising that such failures would never happen again. This act marks a solemn effort to restore dignity to the victims and their loved ones.
