Tucson: Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was repeatedly booed while delivering a commencement address at the University of Arizona after drawing parallels between artificial intelligence and past technological revolutions.

Schmidt, who led Google for a decade, told graduates that AI represented a major technological shift similar to the rise of computers, the internet and smartphones. His remarks quickly drew audible disapproval from sections of the audience.

He acknowledged concerns among young people about job losses, climate change and political instability, but urged graduates not to view the future as predetermined, saying they had the power to shape how AI develops.

As the reaction intensified, Schmidt attempted to continue his speech, encouraging open debate, diversity of perspectives and engagement across differing viewpoints.

He concluded by congratulating the graduating class and telling them the “future is not yet finished” and it was now their turn to shape it.

University officials said Schmidt was invited due to his leadership in technology and contributions to innovation and research.
