Caracas:Venezuela's prisons ministry has finally admitted that political prisoner Victor Hugo Quero Navas died in custody nearly a year ago. Navas, 51, was arrested in January 2025 on terrorism charges under the former Maduro administration. Officials now confirm he died on July 24, 2025, at a Caracas military hospital due to acute respiratory failure.

Despite his mother’s tireless search for months, authorities claimed they had no record of his relatives. Rights group Foro Penal condemned this as "outrageous," accusing officials of deliberate concealment.

Navas's mother was recently led to a makeshift grave marked only by stones. Following her demands, prosecutors have agreed to exhume the body for DNA testing. While an amnesty was adopted following Maduro's ouster, hundreds of political prisoners reportedly remain detained under the interim government.
