Berlin: At least two people were killed and several others injured after a car drove into a crowd in the German city of Leipzig, prompting a major emergency response and police investigation.
The incident took place in a busy pedestrian zone in the city centre, where people were gathered at the time. Local authorities described the situation as a “mass casualty event,” with emergency services rushing to the scene to treat the injured and secure the area.
Officials confirmed that two people died, while several others were seriously injured. The exact number of injured remains unclear, though authorities indicated that multiple people required urgent medical attention.
The driver, a 33-year-old German man, was arrested at the scene after reportedly surrendering without resistance. Police said there was no immediate ongoing threat to the public.
Authorities have not yet determined whether the incident was deliberate or accidental. Early indications suggest the driver may have been experiencing mental health issues, though investigations are ongoing.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the vehicle sped through the pedestrian area, striking multiple people. Emergency responders, including paramedics and firefighters, worked quickly to assist victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Leipzig’s mayor expressed shock over the tragedy, calling it a horrific incident and offering condolences to the victims and their families.
The incident is the latest in a series of vehicle-ramming attacks and similar acts of violence reported in Germany in recent years, raising ongoing concerns about public safety in crowded urban spaces.
